The Energy of the “Symbiosis” of Consciousness: Notes on the Multidirectionality of Ivan Karamazov’s Ideas and Impulses

In the history of the creation of literary characters in world literature, there are three milestones of discussion: the static “stereotyped” characters in two-dimensional space, the dynamic “developing” characters in three-dimensional space, and the “vortex”-like symbiosis/symbiotic characters in multi-dimensional space. Ivan Karamazov in The Brothers Karamazov is a typical example of a symbiosis character. Dostoevsky vividly portrays the coexistence of multiple distinct consciousnesses in Ivan’s mind. This symbiosis character, which emerges from a complex psychological state, is a notable achievement by the outstanding writer who dedicated his life to “najti cheloveka v cheloveke” [finding a human person in a person] and conducting meticulous analysis and artistic scrutiny of the modern soul. The characterization of Ivan showcases the crystallization of the novelist’s deep exploration into the multi-layered structure of the protagonist’s self-consciousness, reflecting a rare and superb aesthetic vision.
