Abstract

Reflections on Dostoevsky as a Philosopher and Theologian

This article addresses the question of whether it is appropriate to use the terms “philosopher” and “theologian” to describe Fyodor Dostoevsky’s work. To this end, it analyses the origins of the two sciences (Philosophy and Theology) in Greece and their subsequent development with the introduction of Christianity on European soil through their most important representatives (Pythagoras, Plato, Aristotle, Tertullian, Augustine of Hippo, Arthur Schopenhauer). Having set out these historical issues, the paper discusses whether it is correct to use these categories to refer to a Christian such as the author of The Brothers Karamazov. Finally, these reflections lead us to be precise with terms and to avoid calling Dostoevsky a “philosopher” and “theologian” in order to describe him as a “prophetic thinker”, echoing the proposal of the Swiss Christian researcher Walter Nigg.
